Connecting SNMP to BACnet

You have two devices in two different buildings on two completely different networks, one that uses the SNMP protocol to communicate, while the other one talks BACnet protocol and they need to talk to each other. What do you do?

A FieldServer is a protocol converter or gateway that can communicate in many different protocols and physical layers including SNMP protocol and the BACnet protocol. The Fieldserver acts as a middle man between the two devices. It reads data from one device, stores it internally and makes it available to the 2nd device using another protocol. This is how the FieldServer converts SNMP data to BACnet data.

It's a simple solution to a common problem that we can help you with.

SNMP

The SNMP driver allows the FieldServer to transfer data to and from devices over Ethernet using the SNMP version 1 protocol. The FieldServer can emulate either a Server (SNMP Agent) or Client.

The Client can be configured to read values specified by their SNMP Object Identifiers (OIDís), which are defined in the MIB file (Management Information Base) of the target device. When acting as an SNMP Agent (Server), the driver makes the contents of specified integer data arrays available to any SNMP Client. The FieldServer MIB file sets out the OIDís to use.

The current version of the driver can send and receive SNMP traps. The following SNMP data types are currently supported:

∑ INTEGER ∑ OCTET_STREAM ∑ TIMER_TICKS ∑ STRING

BACnet

There are a number of flavors of BACnet. Our gateways supports them all.

  • BACnet IP
  • BACnet Eth (802.3)
  • BACnet PTP
  • BACnet MSTP
  • BACnet ARCnet

  • You can read more about the flavors at this page: Flavors of BACnet
Our gateways can act as clients / servers or both at the same time.
