A FieldServer is a protocol converter or gateway that can communicate in many different protocols and physical layers including SNMP(std) protocol and the Metasys N2 protocol. The Fieldserver acts as a middle man between the two devices. It reads data from one device, stores it internally and makes it available to the 2nd device using another protocol. This is how the FieldServer converts SNMP(std) data to Metasys N2 data.

Description: The FieldServer SNMP - STD driver provides an SNMP v.1 client and agent (server). The client can be configured to read values specified by their SNMP Object Identifiers (OIDís), which are defined in the MIB file (Management Information Base) of the target device. The FieldServer SNMP Gateway provides a generic MIB fiel that sets out the OID's structures to use. The FieldServer Enterprise ID is 6347. A selection of standard MIB-2 OID's are supported to allow interaction with popular Network Management packages. Acting as an SNMP agent (server), the SNMP-STD driver makes allows SMCP Get, GetNext(walk) and Set commands to access Data Arrays using the Integer type. The SNMP v1 protocol does not make provisioin for Floats. The SNMP - STD driver can also send SNMP traps. FieldServer's standard MIB file also provides the structures for SNMP traps. Metasys N2 is part of Johnson Controls family of protocols. Metasys N2 is a diverse protocol used by many different devices all with there own quirks and definition of the standard, it can be complicated to get Metasys N2 to talk to other devices. Fieldserver takes care of the complicated issues with Metasys N2 by becoming a middle man that sits between your Metasys N2 device and your other devices. The FieldServer can talk Metasys N2 on one side and anything else you want on the other.

For conversions with a large number of N2 devices or for solutions where you need to keep The Metasys by JCI head ends/controllers in place please visit these pages for an appropriate solution. The original controller can be kept in place and will continue to communicate through the gateway with its N2 devices. You can remove it later or never - your choice.
