You have two devices in two different buildings on two completely different networks, one that uses the BACnet Ethernet protocol to communicate, while the other one talks DeviceNet protocol and they need to talk to each other. What do you do?
A FieldServer is a protocol converter or gateway that can communicate in many different protocols and physical layers including BACnet Ethernet protocol and the DeviceNet protocol. The Fieldserver acts as a middle man between the two devices. It reads data from one device, stores it internally and makes it available to the 2nd device using another protocol. This is how the FieldServer converts BACnet Ethernet data to DeviceNet data.
It's a simple solution to a common problem that we can help you with.
BACnet Ethernet is part of the ASHRAE’s BACnet family of protocols that operates on the Ethernet network. BACnet is mainly used for HVAC systems but recently has started showing up in all types of industrial automation, building automation networks and intelligent buildings.
With the help of a Fieldserver protocol converter we can set and retrieve BACnet Ethernet points, properties, and settings from your device and make them available to other networks and devices. The Fieldserver BACnet protocol driver can convert BACnet Ethernet to an impressive set of other building automation protocols by acting as a protocol converter or gateway. The FieldServer DeviceNet Master X30 Adapter driver can be used to emulate a single Master Scanner station on a DeviceNet network. The DeviceNet adapter is implemented as an ODVA profile 12 communications adapter. Standard DeviceNet baud rates of 125K, 250K and 500kbit/s are supported. DeviceNet Master Scanner can open an I/O connection of up to 512 Bytes in each direction to the DeviceNet Slaves,
The FieldServer DeviceNet Slave X30 Adapter driver can be used to emulate a single slave station on a DeviceNet network. The DeviceNet adapter is implemented as an ODVA profile 12 communications adapter and acts as a group 2 only server on the DeviceNet Network. Standard DeviceNet baud rates of 125K, 250K and 500kbit/s are supported. DeviceNet masters/scanners can open an I/O connection of up to 512 Bytes in each direction to the FieldServer
DeviceNet is a communication protocol used in the automation industry to interconnect control devices for data exchange. It uses Controller Area Network as the backbone technology and defines an application layer to cover a range of device profiles. Typical applications include information exchange, safety devices, and large I/O control networks.
DeviceNet was originally developed by American company Allen-Bradley (now owned by Rockwell Automation). It is layered on top of the CAN (Controller Area Network) protocol, developed by Bosch. In order to promote the use of DeviceNet worldwide, Rockwell Automation has adopted the "open" concept and decided to share the technology to third party vendors. Hence, it is now managed by the Open DeviceNet Vendors Association (ODVA), an independent organization located in North America. ODVA maintains specifications of DeviceNet and oversees advances to DeviceNet. In addition, ODVA ensures compliance to DeviceNet standards by providing conformance testing and vendor conformity.
